It’s been a while…

Because I’m terrible at keeping up with stuff like this. No, really. Every time I start a blog or journal or diary, I make it approximately 4 entries in and then randomly stop. I miss one day and the whole thing goes out the window. Go figure. 🙂 So here we are, a couple (maybe a few) weeks after my last post…I never posted the recipe for the cake, I haven’t updated about our foray into sleep training, I haven’t started refinishing the dresser that’s sitting in our garage…looks like I’ve been pretty productive!

Starting from the top:
I woke up on R’s birthday fully intending to bake him his favorite red velvet cake, only to find out that he would have to leave around 1130am for work and wouldn’t be returning until past baby M’s bed time. This seriously cuts into our celebration time, so I need to make his cake nice and early…because we’re having cake for breakfast. And then I realize that I have no cocoa powder, no red food coloring, and no icing. Oops. I take baby M to the grocery store while R is still asleep…only now I don’t have time to bake a cake, allow it to cool, frost it, and then serve it before R has to leave! I ended up buying half of a sheet cake and asking the lady in the bakery to write on it for me, and then I packed 28 candles onto the top and served it up for R’s super healthy birthday breakfast! No red velvet cake for him…but he did enjoy the chocolate-on-chocolate concoction I was able to pick up VERY last minute, so it all worked out in the end. 🙂
As far as the sleep training goes, Baby M has done VERY well! He goes down in his crib after I nurse him with very little fussing every night now! Typically, he sleeps from about 730pm to somewhere between 2-4am, I change his diaper and nurse him, and then he’s back down until about 7am! So Mommy is a happy camper in the sleep department…until the last 4 nights. I think maybe we’re teething again, because SOMEONE has been inconsolable in the middle of the night, occasional low fever…he’s even had some pretty outrageous diarrhea. He’s needed new jammies twice and a new sheet in the crib once. 😦 I ordered a Baltic amber teething necklace online last Thursday, so hopefully it comes in the mail tomorrow. {As a sidebar, I hate when people refer to themselves as a part of the group in an activity that is so only a one person thing…ie: WE’RE pregnant, WE’RE teething, etc….but I have now learned that teething is a group effort if I’ve ever seen one. Baby might be getting the majority of the pain and suffering, but Mom and Dad are the ones up in the middle of the night comforting, they’re the ones getting bitten and chewed on, and they’re DEFINITELY the ones changing the 6th diarrhea diaper of the day at 1100am. And by Mom and Dad, I mean Mom, and by THEY, I mean I.} But I think we’ll hopefully be back to normal soon!
As far as the stupid dresser…WHO KNOWS if that’ll ever happen! Lol. I mean, I’ve had the darn thing for months. Ideally, Baby M would start to sleep in his crib for naptimes, and I could get it done in shifts while he sleeps…but naptime is for snuggling, and I’m not ready to give that up yet. So we’ll just have to see! Y’all can set up a pool on how long it takes me to start on it, and then another for how long it takes to actually do it!
And as a little extra tidbit of info: I quit caffeine, cold turkey! Today was day three with zero caffeine in my system. I think Baby M napped a little better (caffeine does pass into breast milk, and I was hoping that would help push his sleep issues over the edge), and the headaches stopped after the first day and I’m definitely more hydrated! So that’s what’s new in our house lately! 🙂

See you all again in 2-3 weeks? 😀

Birthday cake. Let’s talk about it.

Mmmmmm. Cake, icing, candles, what’s not to love? Tomorrow is the hub’s birthday, so I’d like to make him a cake. I’ll probably stick with his favorite (red velvet! Yum!), and I’ll post the recipe for everyone, too. This cake was the first thing I ever made from scratch, so it’s easy enough for a novice baker. I remember having a conversation the first time I met a certain Mrs Mchale (I can’t believe that was 2 years ago!!) about what makes red velvet cake different from any other cake. I’ll be honest: I didn’t know then, and I still don’t know now. Red velvet is our favorite, so I’ve never made another from scratch! That recipe will be up tomorrow, and I definitely recommend trying it out! And anyone out there who looks at it and can tell me what’s different about it from any other cake, feel free to let me know!

Ok, so that this post isn’t essentially telling you about another post I’ll make tomorrow, I’ll give you an update. Our poor little man is sick, but hopefully he’ll feel better after a good nights rest. He went down without any issues tonight, so we’ll have to wait and see. He and I both got flu shots today when I brought him in for his 9 month appointment, and he took his like a champ! He only cried for a minute. I really didn’t like his new doctor here in Texas, so I called our insurance on the way home and got switched over so we can pick a new one. I’ll keep you updated on that situation as we get into it. 🙂 and, like I said, hubs is celebrating a birthday tomorrow! The big 28! He’s starting to get to that point where he hates his birthdays now because he feels old, but I’m hoping he still enjoys it. We’ll see!!

One step forward…

3 steps back. So the night of the 5th, Daddy accidentally woke Mac up at midnight and it disrupted the rest of his night. 😦 then last night I realized our little guy is getting sick…congestion is making him wake up every half hour or so! We got more saline drops, but they don’t seem to be helping. 😦 Poor baby. He’s also not napping very well, so he’s really fussy during the day. I hope we get to a good place soon, because it’s really hard to listen to my baby boy cry throughout the night.

Is it possible…

To be addicted to Benadryl? When it’s warm out (and hey, I live in South Texas), I get itchy bumps on my arms and legs, and itchy (minus the bumps) on my face. I’ve tried calamine and this year I bought Benadryl cream, but only taking the actual pills helps me to sleep at night…I just really don’t like how drowsy I feel in the morning after taking it. But anyway, after taking it for a few nights, I sometimes feel like I can’t fall asleep as easily without it. Which is shocking, given the lack of sleep I’ve had for the last 9 months. But on to the fun! —

I tried a new finger food for Mac today–shout out to Sarah for the idea!– I cut a sweet potato into small pieces, tossed in a bit of olive oil, sprinkled with cumin and paprika, and roasted it in the oven. Mac LOOOOOOOVVVVES them, which is awesome, and it’s nice to be able to give him something healthy to munch on when he’s getting frustrated eating his purees while mom and dad are goin HAM on some burgers and baked beans. <–don't as me what happened there…I was overwhelmed by the urge to say it and I don't even know what it means.

We're also making good progress on the whole Sleep Training debacle. As I stated this morning, little dude technically slept through the night last night. He went down at approximately 7:30, woke to get a new diaper and nurse at 3:30, and then went back down until 7am. He did wake up and fuss a couple of times throughout the night, but no more than twice and it barely even woke me up. If I wasn't such a light sleeper, I probably would've slept right through them.

I bought everything I need to refinish the dresser sitting in our garage! I bought this thing secondhand off of a resale group on Facebook, with every intention of refinishing or painting it. This dresser is BUTT UGLY. If youre looking at the front, the drawers are finished nice and dark on the sides, but fade into a lighter stain in the middle…and the sealant is so glossy that the wood gives off a reflection. Omg, it's terrible. AND when the people dropped it off, I found out that the dresser smells like cigarette smoke. Not exactly something that you can tell by looking at a picture online. So, I bought sand paper and a hand sander (the gentleman at Lowe's advised me not to use an electric sander), a quart of Kona stain, and a nice, low-gloss sealant. Hopefully I can work on it some this weekend while daddy watches the baby, but we might have to wait until Mac is able to nap restfully in his crib. So, I'm pretty excited to start on it. I also would like to attach some small shelves on the sides for baby books, and I want to paint the sides of the drawers with a chevron print…just because I think it would be fun. 🙂

Well, that's all in the land of Heiser-dom at the moment…OH! Mac can now take 1-2 steps without falling over! But then he either loses his balance or gets so excited that he tries to jump and THEN loses his balance. But we're working on it. 😀

Sleeping through the night…

Ok, let’s be real. Before babies, sleeping through the night was sleeping from whatever time you decided to go to bed, until you felt like waking up the next morning. Like, 8-12 hours of glorious, uninterrupted sleep. I used to get irritated if I had to get up to pee in the middle of the night. After babies, sleeping through the night is any 5+ hour stretch of sleep. Your baby slept from 730pm-midnight? It counts. Imagine my disdain when I realized that was the best I could hope for after Mac was born…BUT!!!! After 9 months of less than 5 hours a night TOTAL, that felt pretty darn good.

Oh, and yeah, Mac slept through the night last night! Woohoo!!! 😀 he also took his first step right before bedtime, so of course I cried. He’ll be nine months old in 3 days…he’s still a baby! And he’s almost walking! Kids grow up way too fast. We’ll just have to see what new milestones are met today!

Orange Chicken

http://thenoshery.com/2010/03/19/better-than-takeout-orange-chicken/

Ok, so I hope the link works. If it doesn’t, someone let me know and I’ll type it out myself. 🙂 The AWESOME thing about this recipe is that it can be changed and substitutions can be made at your discretion. For example, I doubled the amount of red pepper flakes in the sauce because we LOVE spicy food, and I used ground ginger instead of fresh ginger root, because I didn’t have ginger root on hand. You can bake the chicken instead of pan frying it, you can use fresh squeezed orange juice or whatever packaged kind you keep in the fridge! I think it’s pushing it to say that two chicken breasts serves 6 ppl…I make one chicken breast per person and then have 1-2 good lunches of leftovers normally. One note: using these instructions, I had a really difficult time getting the right consistency for the orange sauce. Instead of dissolving the cornstarch in water and then whisking it in, I suggest whisking very quickly while you add small amounts of corn starch to the sauce until you reach ALMOST the thickness you would like. Let it sit on low (or no) heat for 5-10 minutes and it’ll thicken up quite a bit. You can even make the sauce before hand and then refrigerate it until you’re ready to use it, and it’ll thicken even more! Also, this recipe does take quite a bit of time as written, so I like to make the sauce and prep the chicken (do everything except fry or bake it) the morning of the day I plan to make it for dinner, or even the day before so that I’m not standing in the kitchen for 1-2 hours at once.

Sleep Training (cont’d)

Woohoo! Mac slept most of the night. He woke up 4 times crying, but he soothed himself back to sleep each time! There was one extra wake-up mixed in there, but I changed his diaper and nursed him, and he went right back down without too much trouble! Hopefully he continues on this track and wakes up less frequently, but I’m definitely happy with this improvement. I got enough sleep so that when Mac woke up at 630 this morning, I was refreshed and happy to get up with him. This is the first time that’s happened in months! Just to see what would happen, I laid him down in his crib for his morning nap. As expected, he cried for 15-20 minutes. I mean, what could I expect? I was changing the rules AGAIN. Babies just don’t take that very well. But then, something great happened. Mac sat down, and then laid on his belly…and then he fell asleep! We’ll see how long he naps, but I’m so excited that I won’t wake him up with my daily horribly timed bathroom break! Today we’re making Orange Chicken with Fried Rice for dinner…I’ll post recipes with pictures later! It’s always a hit, so I’ll share with the class. 🙂
